Sometimes, dreams portend a good or bad fortune (premonitory dreams). Scripture teaches:
"When a man dedicated to work for a special wish, sees in his dreams a woman, you can deduce from that vision, that he expected the success." "Then, once washed the Mantha vessel which should be metal or wooden bell, let it lie by the fire on skin or on the bare ground silently and alone. If in his dreams he sees a woman, let her know that this is an omen that his sacrifice has been successful. " (Chh. Up V-2-8-9)
Other passages in the scriptures declare that certain dreams indicate the proximity of death, eg
"If he sees a man black, with black teeth, that man will kill you. " (Kaushitaki Brahmana)
Those who also understand the science of dreams hold the view that the dream of riding an elephant and the like, is a sign good luck, while bad luck would dream of riding on a donkey.
Lord Siva taught Visvamitra, while dreaming, the Mantra called 'Ramaraksha'. The next morning, Visvamitra waking from sleep transcribed exactly.
Some works of genius, such as poems, etc., Are in dreams. Some remedies for diseases are prescribed in a dream. Sometimes, the exact object that was in the dream, is then in the waking state.
Vyasa and other sages, who knew the science of dream state:
"Anything that a Brahmin or a god, a bull or a king to tell a person in a dream will be fulfilled."
Ramanuja argues:
"Because the dream images are produced by God himself, so they have a prophetic significance" .
